Decoding Fabric Nicknames: Is That a Waffle or a Honeycomb?

Some towels come with names that sound like breakfast. Others sound like they belong in a beehive. Waffle. Honeycomb. Ribbed. Hammam. Popcorn. The names are quirky, sometimes poetic, but they also reflect the structure of the weave, how it behaves around moisture, and how it feels against your skin.

This glossary is less about technical jargon and more about what your eye and hand already know. A texture that looks bouncy usually feels that way, too. One that absorbs well often shows it in its pattern.

Waffle

You’ll know it when you see it. The square, grid-like surface is created by floats in the weave that shrink when washed. This gives it that familiar quilted texture, soft yet structured. Waffle towels tend to be lightweight, fast-drying, and easy to pack. Oodaii’s Chalk Waffle Towel is a good example: absorbent, breathable, and made for regular use.

Best for: People who like a bit of visual geometry and fast drying after showers.

Jacquard

Patterns are woven directly into the fabric rather than printed or embroidered on top. These designs often have a raised texture and a two-tone appearance.

Best for: Bed covers and statement pieces.

Hammam

Also known as peshtemal, these towels have flat weaves and usually come with fringe. Popular in Turkish bathhouses, they’re incredibly light and dry in a flash. Though they don’t have the deep texture of waffle or honeycomb, they score high on travel-friendliness.

Best for: Beach days, poolside lounging, or minimalist setups.

Popcorn

More commonly found in robes or certain bath textiles, the popcorn texture is made of raised dots, evenly spaced across the fabric. It adds a plush, spa-like finish without extra weight.

Best for: Towels that double up as home-wear comfort.

Chambray

A plain weave fabric made with coloured and white threads, giving it a soft two-tone effect. Unlike denim, it’s lighter and has a smoother finish.

Best for: Bed sheets, understated textures, or fans of quiet detailing.

Dobby

Created on a special loom that allows for small geometric patterns to be woven into the fabric. It adds discreet texture without overwhelming the eye.

Best for: Bed linen that needs a little structure, visual interest, or both.

Why Names Matter

Texture affects how fast a towel dries, how much it soaks up, how it folds, and even how it smells after a few hours in a humid bathroom. Some weaves feel cooler to touch, others insulate better. The names, whether funny or familiar, help us talk about that sensory experience.

The Oodaii Take

At Oodaii, we keep our weaves intentional. If it’s a waffle, it’s to bring in airiness. If it’s ribbed, it’s to give grip and absorption. And always, we test for how it lives in an Indian home, where drying times, humidity, and frequency of use all play a role.
